Dog Food Ratings Or Dog Food Preferences – The Choice is Yours!

In searching for the right kind of dog food for your dog, you might come across dog food ratings. Basically, these ratings just tell you the quality of the dog food they are offering. But having a high dog food rating doesn’t really mean that your pooch will love it. You still have to use your owner’s instinct and common sense to choose the right food for your dog.

Indeed, choosing the best dog food goes beyond dog food ratings. But with all the products available today, it can be a confusing choice to make without the ratings to guide you. Nevertheless, you still need to know the factors which can affect your selection of dog food.

Your dog’s age is of prime importance when choosing a dog food since dogs of different ages have different nutritional requirements. You should also look at your dog’s present body condition. If your dog is a couch potato, he will certainly have different needs compared to one who loves playing in the yard. Choose a dog food that will meet what your dog needs in terms of activity.

Your dog’s health history is also another important factor to consider. If he suffers from allergies or digestion difficulties, you have to look for a dog food that is appropriate for his condition. Also to consider is the budget you have for dog food. In general, a higher priced dog food will be healthier but in the end it all boils down to the best kind of dog food you can afford.

Dog food ratings, on the other hand, will not matter to your dogs at all. You have to remember that dogs are just like humans. They have individual needs and preferences. Some dogs love canned food while others prefer dry dog foods. And there are dogs that love chicken while yours may prefer beef.

The choice of the right dog food to give is really a trial and error process. You may have to go through different dog foods before getting one that your dog will actually eat and that will meet his nutritional requirements at the same time.

Aside from dog food ratings, you also need to look at the dog food ingredients closely. Ingredients are listed by weight and the best dog foods are those that have meat or fish listed as the first ingredient. With meat or fish as the first ingredient, you are assured that your dog is getting protein from the right sources. Your dog food should not contain artificial flavors, preservatives, and color. Instead, it must be rich in vitamins and minerals necessary for a healthy coat and optimum activity.

When you are shifting your dog from one kind of dog food to another, allow ample time for your dog to get used to his new food. Wait a month before you make any judgment on whether or not a particular dog food is appropriate for your dog. If you are still confused on which dog food to buy and are unsure about choosing them through dog food ratings alone, consult your veterinarian.

Dog food nutrition experts who advocate the B.A.R.F. Diet, which consists of raw meat and organic ingredients, say that it is the proper way to feed pet dogs. B.A.R.F. tries to imitate wild animals’ type of dietary system. According to backers, this type of diet is the most natural that it helps prevent the need for veterinary intervention in the course of your dog’s lifetime.

B.A.R.F. is believed to promote longevity, reproductive capability, and our dogs’ overall health. Once the fundamentals of this type of diet are understood, any dog owner can implement the diet in caring for his dogs. No highly specialized form of education is required.

B.A.R.F. feeding is comprised of 60% meaty bones and 40% organic foods and other dog food ingredients. The meaty bones portion should be made up of 60%-70% raw chicken bones and 30%-40% bones from raw rabbit, lamb, pork, venison, beef, etc.

The organic portion of the diet should be about 60%-70% green leafy vegetables with about 20%-30% grain and starchy vegetables. The diet’s offal portion of kidneys, livers, and hearts should make up about 5%-15%. Owners can add raw eggs a few times a week or as desired.

Administering B.A.R.F. in your dog’s diet also has its benefits to dog owners. The most important of all is that you reduce or are totally spared from veterinary bills. Obesity can be a major problem when it comes to dogs but feeding them B.A.R.F. dog food recipes ensures that it maintains a healthy weight.

B.A.R.F. feeding naturally cleans you dog’s teeth, promotes fresher breath, and shinier coats. A bad stomach ache, arthritis, allergies, skin conditions, and other health problems can be avoided if you switch from commercial dog foods to B.A.R.F. feeding. People who have tried it say that their pets have better appetite and are more energetic. This type of diet can easily be customized to meet the needs of your dog.

Treat Your Dog to the Benefits of Homemade Dog Biscuits and Enjoy the Benefits Yourself Too!

Giving that dog of yours a nice healthy treat that tastes delicious to them is the best thing that you can do for their health. When you give them a lot of treats that are not healthy for them, over time, they can eventually pay the price with various health issues. Not to mention, the price of store bought dog biscuits can be taxing on your wallet. That is why it can be a good idea to think outside of the box and think homemade. Homemade dog biscuits can be made easily if you get the right recipe. There are many benefits to making homemade dog biscuits. These benefits are:

1. Make ANY kind you want - When you go to the store and buy dog biscuits, you are limited to the kind that they have on the shelf. Sometimes you are not going to want to give your dog chicken dog biscuits or liver biscuits, etc… They enjoy variety in their diets just like us. They like to have a change every now and then.

2. Easy to follow recipes - When you find the right homemade dog biscuit recipe, you will be surprised how easy they are to make. When you have the right ingredients, it is a simple matter of mixing, batting and molding. You do not have too much preparation time and you will have them done in a matter of minutes. That is how easy it can be and you can make them any flavor you want.

3. Make ANY size you want - When you buy dog biscuits in the store you are limited to the bag of treats that they have in stock. This includes size, quantity, and flavor. But what if you have a large dog and a little dog? You have to buy two different kinds. When you make them yourself, you can make the few tiny dog biscuits that the little dog is going to eat and you can make some big homemade dog biscuits for your larger dog. This way you do not have to worry about wasting money on biscuits that might just go stale.

So why not try making your own homemade dog biscuits? With the choice of variety, easy to follow recipes and the ability to make them any size that you want, why not! Not to mention, you save a few bucks in the process!

Back in 2007 many dog owners were horrified when they heard about the hundreds of pets that had died from eating commercial dog foods. Since the pet food recall of that year dog owners have been more careful about what they feed their animals. The reading of commercial dog food labels, however, does not necessarily tell what your dog is really eating. The only way to know exactly what our dogs eat is by making homemade dog food. Because of busy schedules, many of us do not have the time to even consider this option. So what are dog owners to do?

There are many views and theories on what is the best dog food. In general however, to many pet owners it all boils down to cost. If we can afford it then that will be the dog food brand we will feed our dogs. Unfortunately this may not be the best course of action to take. Price is not a sound qualifier for choosing a commercial dog food. Feeding our dogs sub par ingredients from “discount dog foods” may save us money, but in the long run we will wind up paying higher veterinary bills when our dogs get sick. So what are we to do?

First off we can start by being more careful when it comes to inspecting the ingredients found on dog food labels. Generic brands are not considered a good choice. Most generic brands use poor quality ingredients. We should avoid any generic meat ingredients that do not mention a specific species, and avoid such phrases as “meat by-products” and “meat and bone meal” and any brands that use corn as the main ingredient. Looking for dog food brands that use “chicken or beef meal” is the way to go.

Generic or discount dog foods use many chemicals to enhance the taste of that particular food. These chemicals only disguise what is really in the food and fool your dog into preferring it. We should be on the look out such things as texturizers, coloring agents and drying agents. Avoid any brands that lists these as dog food ingredients. Premium dog foods use a higher grade of ingredients free from additives but of course at a higher price. If you are truly into caring for your dog, then you might consider preparing your dog’s food using your own ingredients.

Since the pet food recall making your dog’s food from a collection of homemade dog food recipes has become more popular. Making these recipes does require some research and extra work, but with this option we are in control of our dog’s nutrition. Proper dog food nutrition involves providing our dogs with the right balance of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. One of the best dog food recipes to use is Dr. Ian Billinghurst’s BARF diet .

The idea of the B.A.R.F. diet is to feed our dogs raw whole foods just like their ancestors. This diet consists of muscle meat, bone, fat, organ meat and vegetables. It does take a considerable amount of time to make these preparations. Premium commercial dog foods have gone through considerable research in providing the necessary nutrition a dog needs and may have more nutrients than those found through the BARF diet.

So if we truly care for our dogs, we as dog owners have just two choices. Either prepare homemade dog food so that we know exactly what our dog is eating, or buy a premium dog food. With the second choice we should spend more time in learning about dog food labels and the AAFCO standards. It’s all up to us.

Only you, the dog owner, has your dog’s health and well being in mind. The benefits of making a wholesome well balanced dog food will promote a healthier skin and coat, strong well developed bones, defined muscle tone, bright clear eyes, healthier teeth and gums, firmer stools, and hopefully fewer trips to your Vet.

To be able to determine what is the best food to feed your dog when making dog food recipes it is a good idea to first learn how to read dog food labels properly. In this way you can compare the ingredients in the food you make your dog to what is in the manufactured dog food brands.

Most commercial dog foods are very generalized in their labeling procedures because they are targeting a wide customer base. Not all commercial dog foods are bad, but it is important to understand that most of these products fall short in key nutrients needed for the vitality and health of the dog. Many are loaded with fillers that provide no nutritional benefit whatsoever.
So lets read through a dog food label and see what ingredients are being used and how we can improve on them when we make our own dog food recipes.

A dog food label consists of ingredients, an analysis and feeding instructions. We will only concerm ourselves with the ingredients for the purpose of this exercise.

The List of ingredients
Ingredients are listed in weight order. However pet food manufacturers can disguise the less desirable ingredients by breaking them down into several ingredient catagories. Read all the ingredients carefully especially the preservatives and food colorings. To develop a good dog food recipe here is a list of the most common ingredients used.

Meat:
This is the clean flesh of a slaughtered animal. However, the flesh can include striated skeletal muscle, tongue, diaphragm, heart and esophagus, For our purpose we would want to use chicken or fish which contain the highest percentages of protein.

Meat By-products:
These are the clean parts of slaughtered animals such as lungs, spleen, kidneys, brain, liver, blood, bone, and stomach and intestines freed of their contents. It does not include hair, horns, teeth, or hooves. We have no need for meat by-products in our dog food recipes but it is good to be aware of what this term truly implies implies.

Poultry By-products:
As in meat by-products these are the clean parts of slaughtered poultry such as heads, feet, and internal organs. It does not contain feathers. Again not for us to be concerned.

Chicken or Fish Meal:
This is the clean ground tissue of undecomposed whole chicken or fish or their cuttings, with or without the oil extracted.

Beef Tallow:
This is fat derived from beef.

Ground Corn:
This is the entire corn kernel ground or chopped.

Corn Gluten Meal:
This is the by-product of corn syrup or starch, and is the dried residue after the removal of the bran, germ, and starch. Pet food manufacturers use this as a filler. We cab use this in our recipes but in small amounts.

Brewers Rice:
This is the small fragments of rice kernels that have been separated from larger kernels of milled rice and also used as a filler ingredient.

Brown Rice:
This is the unpolished rice left over after the kernels have been removed. This we can use for our recipes because it provides nutrional value to our dog food preparations.

Soybean Meal:
This is a by-product of the production of soybean oil.

BHA:
This is butylated hydroxyanisole, a fat preservative.

Ethoxyquin:
This is a chemical preservative that is used to prevent spoilage in dog food.

Tocopherols:
These are naturally occurring compounds used as natural preservatives.

As you can see there are very few ingredients listed on any dog food labels that are useful for our purpose. All we really need to make a good meal for our dogs is chicken or fish, certain vegetables and maybe a small amount of corn gluten to help in digestion. To learn more about dog food nutrition and dog food ingredients read the appropriately named articles on this site.

Dog Treats – Natural and Healthy – Fast and Easy

Our lives are so fast-paced. We are constantly on the go. We want to be healthy, but who has time to cook healthy foods? And our pets’ lives mimic our own. They can’t cook their own healthy treats and we certainly don’t have the time to do it for them!

We would love to be able to cook natural healthy treats for our dogs. But who has time? Millions of us drive through McDonald’s for our own treats. If Carl’s Jr. made dog treats, their business would go through the proverbial roof. All dogs seem to have the right corporate mentality for Carl’s Jr., of “don’t bother me – I’m eating!”

We know that we should eat right. And we know that we should treat our dogs with something that is healthy. But it is easier not to. Isn’t it?

Not anymore!

Now there are products that make it EASY to treat our dogs to natural healthy treats. It’s as quick as opening a Ziplock bag! Some natural healthy dog treats are 100% natural, low in fat, high in protein, and low in cholesterol. They are various kinds of treats – all in playful shapes and sizes.

All the dogs we tested loved the taste of these treats. All of their owners were so happy with the fact the treats are natural, healthy, quick, and easy.

We are still on the lookout for human food that is as quick and easy while being 100% natural and healthy like the dog treats we have found. For now, we can definitely alter our pets’ snacking habits. No more junk food for man’s best friend!

So many of us are rescuing doggies from the pound. We want to treat them to the best.

Dog Treats: Quick and Easy, Natural and Healthy

Now if they would only start selling natural and healthy fast food for humans, then the proverbial roof would explode with excitement.

But wait, all of these dog treats are human grade, so . . . perhaps?

All Dog Foods Are Not The Same

Introduction

Your dog’s health and well being is important to you and your family. Not to mention keeping down the cost of veterinarian bills! So you need to carefully consider the food that you give your dog. People sometimes just pick the first dog food bag they see at the store. It’s easy to overlook the importance of dog food but it is essential to pick the right one for your dog.

To keep your dog healthy he needs plenty of fresh water and should be fed good quality dog food in amounts just right to meet his energy requirements. Always follow the guidelines on the dog food package for recommended feeding amounts.

Picking a dog food

The first challenge in choosing a dog food is picking one that has overall quality. The term that comes up a lot about dog food is human grade. Human grade implies that the dog food is good enough for us to eat. Many commercial dog foods are made from materials unusable or less desirable for human consumption. Often the meat that is used in dog food is of a quality considered unfit for humans to eat.

Major dog food companies try to provide balanced proportions of vitamins and minerals for maximum benefit to your dog. Although you may see that many brands of dog food have almost identical labels, a reputable dog food company will provide an explanation for each supplement and how it benefits your dog.

Always read the label to see what proteins, vitamins and minerals are being provided to your dog. Try not to use store brand dog food they may short change your dog on much needed nutrition.

Studies have shown that the primary ingredient in dog food should be meat-based protein, not corn meal, flour or corn gluten meal. According to reviews a better quality dog food results in a healthier coat, fewer digestive problems and firmer stools. Pet-nutrition experts agree that the best dog food is made from human-grade ingredients like meat, whole grains and vegetables. Premium dog food is so important because good nutrition is essential for a long, healthy life.

Types of dog food

There are many varieties of dog food to choose from. The three most popular types of dog foods are dry, semi-moist and canned products. Check the color of your dog food. Usually dog food made from natural ingredients will have soft earth tones and contain no preservatives, artificial colors and flavors.

Raw dog food is becoming more popular. More and more veterinarians recommend feeding your dog with raw dog food. They feel that this is the best choice and is the healthiest food for your dog. After all, you’ve never seen your dog enjoy commercial dog food the way he enjoys a good meaty bone.

Raw food advocates concede the diet costs more than traditional dog food, but they argue it’s worth it. You may find that locating free natural home made dog food recipes is not easy. Try making a mixture of ground turkey, rice and carrot as your own dog food. Your dog will thank you for it.

If you decide to go the commercial route, try and choose a good premium dog food since it contains more energy and protein than an economy brand. Unfortunately not all dog food brands contain high quality and natural ingredients, so always check the label. It is best if you seek advice from your veterinarian before deciding on which dog food to feed your dog or puppy. He will know your dog’s dietary needs and you will find that veterinary offices and feed stores often carry excellent and natural dog food.

All Natural Dog Food

Many natural dog foods contain only fresh, natural and wholesome ingredients for your dog. Not only are the protein ingredients digestible, but the carbohydrates in the dog food are digestible. Natural dog food has 100% nutritional value which is important for healthy strong dogs. Chicken, egg and fish are examples of protein that is provided in natural dog food. There are also ingredients in natural dog food that really help the health of your dog’s skin and also your dog’s coat. One of the main draw backs of natural dog food is that it has a shorter shelf life and may spoil before it is used.

Dried Dog Food

A good high quality dry dog food will work out to be more economical than the generic brands even though they cost more per pound. A vast majority of dog owners go for dry dog food for its convenience and ease of storage. The cheaper dry dog foods are made from soybean, corn or rice, while many premium dry dog foods are made with all-natural, human-grade ingredients.

Vegetarian dog foods

There are dog foods specially formulated for dogs that are allergic to wheat, corn, and/or chicken. There are also vegetarian dog foods marketed to owners who do not want their dogs to consume meat products. Most vegetarian dog foods use soy as a protein source. If your dog has allergies consult your vet before putting him on a specialized diet.

Conclusion

Overall it’s usually best to let dogs enjoy dog food and not our food, even though they may prefer what we’re eating! Of course you can feed your dog treats from time to time, every dog needs some TLC from time to time!
